“A home for your larger toys”

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen I was younger I did up a jeep. It was my pride and joy, but it kept getting in the way. I was always worried about it getting rained on, and moving it when it wasn’t ready to be moved. The thought kind of spoilt the experience…

Unfortunately my Jeep  never had the home it deserved. And now, years later when I look at the Storboss Mountaineer MHD Storage Shed , it’s like going back in time. A HOME FOR MAN SIZED TOYS and projects, and maybe a second Jeep restoration.

It ticks all the boxes that need to be ticked when it comes to storing your pride and joy.

PROS CONS
Large door opening No windows or skylights
Reinforced steel for strength Instructions are tough to understand
15 year limited warranty No vents (we can see)

[box type=”tick”]1st Tick – Security[/box]

It’s strong and safe. There’s no way for opportunist eyes to see what’s inside, the steel panels are thicker than average, and the trusses are reinforced to take a heavy snow load (25lbs per square foot.)

The shed’s appearance is also under the radar. It DOESN’T DRAW ATTENTION like some others do. Its single tone color scheme and modest appearance doesn’t scream ‘open invitation’.

[twocol_one]

[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]
GREAT FOR STORING
Project car
Hot Rod
ATV’s
Workbench
Car Trailer
Boat
[/twocol_one_last]

[box type=”tick”]2nd Tick – Size[/box]

There is plenty of room inside. To start, the swinging DOORS OPEN 8FT WIDE, which is more than plenty for ride on machinery and any other equipment.

It comes in sizes from 10×10 to 10×30 which is large enough for your boat, hot rod or even your dragster.

The minimum height inside the shed of 6’2” tall, so unless it’s a horse (and we don’t recommend keeping horses in it) then you should be able to ride or drive it in and out do problems.

[box type=”tick”]3rd Tick – Price[/box]

You can get this shed for a very modest price, which is great because toys cost money. Although be sure to price in a concrete slab in your costing’s. The shed doesn’t come with a foundation.

[box type=”alert”]Considerations[/box]

There are a few pitfalls however, but NOTHING THAT CAN'T BE FIXED WITH an angle grinder, a welder and some imagination.

  1. There’s no way for natural light to get in. A window or two wouldn’t go astray, or skylights if your security conscious.
  2. There are no vents. You might want to keep the place ventilated if using chemicals.

Overall:

This is a strong secure shed, with plenty of room that’s great value for money. Get yours before I get them all.

[quote]A great value shed for anyone looking to clean out their garage, patio or house and get their space back[/quote]

PROSCONS
Wood grain (we are told that it looks better in person)The packaged instructions are a little hard to understand
Easy to understand instillation guide available onlineEverything is an added extra, and you do need some of the added extras.
Easy to assemble, even with 1 person
Great value for money

If you are looking for a decent looking but inexpensive shed, then you have found your winner.

The Arrow Woodlake 6 x 5 ft. Shed is metal, with a baked-on enamel wood grain finish that is durable and stands up to harsh weather conditions.

Review:

The wood grain look is personal preference, with some reviewers referring to it as ‘the outhouse’, and even suggesting painting half-moons on the doors. But all who have purchased believe that the shed looks better in person than online.

Along with the tough outside, the shed is double braced for extra reinforcement. Although if you live in areas prone to snow, you may want to consider the roof strengthening kit, as the pitch is quite low.

The 6×5 foot storage space is enough space to store your landscape items, old paint tins, and a push mower.

The doors slide open to save any room for door clearances inside or outside the shed. The sliding mechanism has a deep track for nonstick, sliding. The opening clearance is 32” x 60”.

When shut THE DOORS CAN BE PADLOCKED FOR SECURITY. There are no windows for people to peek into either.

Assembly:

It is very easy to assemble, the metal parts are precut and pre drilled to save you time and effort. When placed on a level footing, everything lines up as it should.

The shed is light and therefore does need to be secured to the ground. Arrow sell a ground fixing kit which is another extra that you will need to purchase.

In short this shed does everything it should. It is secure, sturdy when installed properly and it keeps out the rain.

IT DOES WHAT IT DOES WELL, but it is not a work shed. It is too small and it is not tall enough to accommodate anyone for a period of time.

Arrow have put together an easy to follow along instructional guide to putting the shed together.

Extras:

You will most likely need some extras if you buy this shed, and they aren't cheap.

Floor kit, Anchor kit and roof strengthening kit (for snow conditions)

Our Verdict:

Although the added extras may make it a little more costly than it first appears, the Arrow Woodlake 6 x 5ft. shed is a great value shed to clean out your garage, patio or house and GET YOUR SPACE BACK.

Electrogalvinanised steel is long lasting

Metal sheds represent great value for money and this one is no exception

On the outside it looks neat, and will fit in with most properties with its clean white exterior. It is easy to install, with pre-cut and pre-drilled panels and parts for simple DIY assembly.

Review:

One big issue that we see with metal sheds is corrosion and rust. This sheds metal panels are electro-galvanized, which provides some resistance against the elements corroding the shed.

Being metal though it does have its strengths. It will not rot, or be affected by the heat, excess sunlight or cold temperatures. This allows you to place a metal shed in those fully exposed areas of your yard.

With Arrow sheds, everything is an extra. This includes the ground fixing kit (so the shed doesn't blow away as it is quite light), the floor kit, and a roof strengthening kit (if you live in snow prone areas).

An instruction video of two people assembling a similar Arrow shed

The floor kit also requires you to provide the plywood for the floor. Reviewers recommend the thickest plywood you can afford, and say that you can get it cut to your exact dimensions from hardware stores (like Home Depot).

All sheds like to be on a flat, level surface which allows the doors to open and close freely. The sliding mechanism on Arrows Hamlet shed will give you some forgiveness though if you do place the shed on slightly unleveled ground.

Good for storing:

This is an economical way to store your garden equipment, along with any excess stuff from your garage. There is enough room for a ride on mower, bikes, pool supplies and general garden equipment. It is secured with a padlock on the doors, and has no windows for would be thieves to peer into.

It keeps out the rain, and will stand tall against all the elements. However, it is not a work shed. There is no natural light and its height is too low to stand up straight in.

Warranty:

This shed comes with Arrows 12 year limited warranty

Our Verdict:

All in all, this is a great value shed for anyone looking to clean out their garage, patio or house and get their space back.

Great value for moneyAny add-ons (such as guttering) are additional extras

Durable steel construction

A great solution for warmer climates

The Arrow Free Standing Car Port is a great solution for those in warmer climates who would like somewhere that’s more… connected with nature.

On a nice day, sometimes its only shade that you really require, and the car port provides that, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors.

[twocol_one]

[/twocol_one] [twocol_one_last]

Review:

The vinyl coated, electro-galvanized steel keeps the carport rust and corrosion free in the toughest of conditions. This means your shelter will look great for years to come and not wear, fade or rot.

Assembly is relatively simple. The parts are pre-cut, pre-drilled and are labelled for easy identification and construction. However, putting on the roof panels is a two man job and can be quite tedious.

Another part we didn’t like was that like all Arrow products everything is extra. This includes the foundation you wish to use, and also guttering if you require it. However, details of how to secure the carport to a foundation and information about guttering are available in the instruction manual available online.

Your local HOA or council will also have information about installing and securing this car port too. An important point to note is that this is not for Canadian customers, as it will not pass Canadian building codes. (we are not sure why)

Warranty:

This shed comes with a 12 year limited warranty. The warranty is covered in more detail here

[/twocol_one_last]

Our Verdict:

Apart from a car, boat or caravan this shed is not for storing your items. But for someone who requires some outdoor space out of the weather then this car port is an economical and durable solution.

An economical, serviceable option that does the job well

This Compact shed is a neat and affordable way to organize your yard. Its durable paint finish is baked-on enamel over galvanized steel, to resist the harshest conditions.

Storage:

For a shed of this size, it is quite tall with a 70-inch peak height so you can store your shovels, rakes and tall garden equipment standing up. You can buy or make your own shelf to allow storage for smaller items.

Larger items will have a tough time getting and fitting in. A push lawn mower for instance, may only fit if the handle is folded up. And even then it will be a struggle to get it in, once you have other equipment in there.

[/twocol_one_last]

Assembly:

The panels are all pre-cut and pre-drilled for easy assembly, although some reviewers had trouble with the holes not lining up as they should. To combat this, you must construct the shed on a flat surface, and be prepared to put the screws in on an angle sometimes.

Once constructed the shed is so light that it can be moved. A fit person can stand up in the middle of the shed and lift the roof to place it where it needs to go.

Because of this, the shed does need to be anchored down well to stop it moving when installed. Arrow does sell a range of anchoring kits to do the job, otherwise you can build your own wooden frame, or lay a small concrete slab down.

Foundation:

It is important to note when doing your costing, that the floor is not included. So you can either make your own, or purchase the floor kit from arrow.

Our Verdict:

The Arrow Brentwood 5 x 4 ft. Shed is a very affordable, quick and easy way to store your garden equipment. For its size it is a price leader and worth the investment, but don’t expect any extras.

What to Look for in a Metal Shed

The Gauge (Thickness) of the Metal

Thicker metal gives a shed better rigidity, but it is also strength and durability. It means that the shed is stronger and can take more punishment.

Manufacturers also can't easily fake thicker gauge metal, so when you look for a shed, judging them on the thickness of the panels is a good way to tell a quality shed.

Height of the Roof

Typically its the height of the shed that suffers when manufacturers are trying to save money. And although we all like a cheap shed, hitting your head is something you'd probably prefer to avoid.

Of course if your not fussed about your head, a shorter shed is a good way to save money.

Security

One reason we buy a shed is to secure our stuff. And although metal is a tough material, some metal sheds can be easily broken into.

Cheaper metal sheds tend to have holes for a padlock, as opposed to an internal mechanism to lock the doors, which is a lot more secure.

Strength

Strength is important in any shed, especially if you live in areas prone to heavy snow fall. Some sheds are reinforced to deal with heavier snow loads, and some are not.

If strength is important to you, then there are reinforced metal sheds out there.

The Pros And Cons of Metal Sheds

Looking to get the job done on time and on budget?

pros and cons of metal sheds

Like wood sheds, metal sheds have sat in many yards for years.

Maybe unfairly they have developed a reputation for being the cheaper option. And although they still are great value,  recently they have had a face-lift or two.

Nowadays, the coatings and build quality are better than ever (generally). And metal sheds are seeing a resurgence in popularity, and not only in peoples yards.

Metal sheds are particularly popular with shed manufacturers, and metal is the choice material for large warehouses. But just because it is popular, does that make it a good material for the shed in your yard?

To answer that question we have put together a list of the pros and cons of metal sheds, so you can make up your own mind. Enjoy.

ProsCons
Great value for moneyTough to modify
Long lasting (if installed properly)Prone to rust and corrosion
Little maintenance requiredFeel a little flimsy compared to others
Resists extreme temperaturesAppearance
Easy to Assemble
Small metal sheds are light enough to be moved

The PROS of Metal Sheds:

Great Value for Money

Metal is a cheap shed material available, which makes it a popular choice with home owners worldwide.

Long Lasting

Being metal though it does have its strengths. It will not rot, or be affected by the heat, excess sunlight or cold temperatures. This allows you to place a metal shed in fully exposed areas of your yard.

Metal is not used on its own much these days. It is coated in vinyl and or galvanized to make it long lasting. You can expect your metal shed to look good for 10+ years straight out of the box.

Little Maintenance Required

Metal sheds do not require painting, or sanding or pest control like wooden sheds do. The only maintenance issues are typically with rust and corrosion, which don’t require much action.

Resists Extreme Temperatures

Metal is strong in the heat or cold which means it wont distort or warp under different conditions. Metal sheds can also be reinforced against strong winds, (typically an added extra.)

Easy to Assemble

Metal sheds all come in pre-cut and pre-drilled kits, making instillation relatively easy. Although not all instructions are created equal, the assembly of metal sheds is doable for even occasional

Small Metal Sheds are Easy to Move

If you are thinking of moving, or you are renting then a small metal shed can do the job. They are cheap and can be moved in the bed of a pickup quite easily.

The CONS of Metal Sheds:

Metal is Tough to Modify

Modifying a metal shed is not a DIYer’s job. It can require some serious tools such as welders, sheet folders and angle grinders. Because of this putting a window in a shed can be too hard for the average home owner, and either gets put in the too hard basket, or involves replacing the whole shed.

  • Tip – Buy a little larger than you need.

Prone to Rust and Corrosion

Although metal sheds are durable and are getting better at being long lasting, they are still susceptible to rust and corrosion. Rust looks terrible, it eats away at metal like a cancer and it’s inevitable when you have a shed exposed to the elements like most are.

  • Tip – When purchasing a tin shed is sure it is rust resistant and carries a warranty against rust.

Feels a Little Flimsy

Metal sheds selling point is usually the price. This focus on price can lead us to buy sheds because we can afford them, not because of their quality. Flimsyness is usually due to a thin gauge metal sheet being used to line the shed.

  • Tip – If you are able to compare in person or on the specification, also check the gauge of the metal being used. The thicker and heavier, the better.

Appearance

Metal sheds look clean but aren't the nicest looking sheds. To combat this, metal shed manufacturers are now lining the outside of their sheds with PVC or Vinyl coating which does enhance the appearance.

  • Tip- Look for sheds with a coating on the outside, something that will resist the weather and keep the shed looking nice
