Product Description

Raising chickens can be a fun and rewarding experience for any backyard farmer. They produce nutritious eggs, as well as organic fertilizer, and are low-cost pets to maintain. Because chickens need room to roam and stretch their wings while still feeling safe, trixie's chicken coop with outdoor run is ideal for these lively companions. The traditional design allows your flock to roam inside and outside, upstairs and downstairs, in the sun or in the shade for ideal comfort. However, the sliding door at the top of the ramp allows for restricted access as needed. Upstairs features a sleeping house with a removable roosting pole and pull-out plastic tray for easy maintenance. It connects to a large nesting box which can be converted into 2 separate boxes by inserting our removable divider. Both the coop and nesting box have a hinged roof with locking arm that opens from above for easy access. Head downstairs and the close-mesh galvanized metal grid protects the flock from predators, and the lower wood paneling protects them from the wind while they stretch, peck and flap. Solid wood construction, galvanized metal, composite asphalt shingles and a weatherproof finish means this coop will endure years of use with very little maintenance. Suitable for up to 2 standard size chickens or 4 bantams. One year warranty. Color glazed pine. Measurements 66.75 by 30.25 by 41.25-Inch, mesh door opening 16 by 37-Inch. Weight 73-pounds.

Nice looking, but small and ramp is too slick for chickens feet
4 Stars
Nice looking, but small and ramp is too slick for chickens feet
First, I will give you a bit of background. I've raised and showed chickens for over 30 years, so I know just a bit about them. My husband and I live on a large dairy farm with various other animals, and I ordered this because, I had a broody hen who hatched out 4 eggs we put under her and her and her babies were getting way too big for the pet porter we had them in. I wanted a place to put her and her babies (now at 2 months old) in to integrate them back into the flock of 40, while she was teaching them how to go to roost, etc. My husband is so busy; I thought that this coop would be faster than having to build a small transitional coop.First, one box arrived via UPS, and the next day a second box. So, just be aware that if you just get one box you will have to wait for the next box to arrive to complete your coop. The directions are not great either! Good thing, my husband put it together (ha-ha). Measurements are 68 inches by 30 by 41-Inches.This coop looks nice. The finish is very nice. The hardware cloth looks to be fairly good quality. Though, this thing is smaller than it looks. Currently, we have the one momma chicken (a standard size Buff Orpington) and her 4 young (3 pullets and 1 cockerel) in there and it really is too small for all of them, but, since it is just transitional, it will work.If I was ordering this for a permanent home for chickens, I would NEVER put more than 2 full sized chickens or 4 bantam chickens in this. If chickens are overcrowded you can have a ton of behavior and health problems, such as feather picking, due to boredom. I added photo's to show how cramped it is with just my one hen and her 4 chicks. Of course, you can move this often to fresh grass and build another run to hook on to give more room. Also, one thing I didn't like about this coop is that the ramp into the house is finished wood and it is too slick for chicken's feet. My chickens don't like to use it. I plan on gluing some shingles to it for added traction or adding more wooden slats between the slick wood.Another thing, I thought could be improved was the quality of the latches and closures, particularly on the doors. I will probably replace the latches with a better quality latch, as raccoons could easily open up the doors.I wish there was a sliding cover on the one window in the coop, as during winter at night this could be closed if there were a sliding cover. When I use this coop in winter I will cover this up at night.Though, I think this is the perfect coop (with a bit of tweaking and more winterizing) for a broody hen to hatch her brood and raise them if you want her separated from the rest of the flock. Also, this would be perfect for one hen and one rooster if you want to insure that you have purebred fertile eggs- which is what I plan to use it for once my hen and her chicks are integrated back into the big flock.Overall, I would purchase it again, as it is quick to put up, looks nice, it's easy to get the eggs out, easy to clean and does the job I need it for. Though, if you can build fairly well, and want more than 2 full-sized chickens, we built an 8ftx8ft coop, complete with everything for just $50 more.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Cooptastic!
Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2016
I really like this little coop and run!! First the cons, thus four stars... The two separate boxes are poorly packaged by the manufacturer so the hardware packet gouges the wood during shipping and there is poor protection for the corners so a lot of damage can happen in transit. My delivery was passable but there was visible damage and a slide lock was sheared off and useless but since previous reviewers had complained about crappy hardware rusting right out of the box, I had purchased better replacement hardware already. Glad I did. It is indeed sub-standard. Based on others' reviews of the slippery ramp, I bought one foot of carpet runner, cut it to fit and glued it to the ramp for traction. The chicks loved it. Not like a chick loves a cool car but still... It worked great.
I put this together alone in a couple hours. The instructions are vague but I'm handy so that wasn't a big deal. If you are remotely logical you can figure out what goes where. If you can't, well you should probably rethink raising chickens. ;-)

So in the pros column, even though this coop is small, really only good for two chickens, I really like its compact design and that the whole run is covered. It is highly expandable and I plan to add a chunnel (chicken tunnel) to the other one I will be buying because I have 4 chicks. But this really beats building it from scratch if it's your first coop. The nest box is well designed, secure and attaches well to the main coop. Though I will add a rain seal to the hinged seam as weather will definitely get in there. And no one wants wet, cranky chickens. I did replace the hinges and padlock hasps because we have raccoons and I saw them pointing and laughing at the existing hardware.

I'm using sand in the bottom as it is super easy to clean with a "reptile scoop". I have another aviary with numerous birds and sand is a breeze to keep clean. I laid down and leveled a 3x5 foot pad of cement pavers to set the coop on so no critters could dig into it. Adding the sand gives the chicks a nice organic surface. Since the bottom of the run is open, setting it on dirt or grass would be great too but didn't work in my yard. This coop is light so two people can move it anywhere. I paid around $150 for this on Amazon and it's totally worth it. If it's back up over $200 well, I'd rethink it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cute, Compact, Overpriced and Lacking in Quality
Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2015
Very disappointed with the quality. Within a week of being outside while waiting for the chickens to arrive, the two slide latches for the doors were discolored, rusting and staining the wood. Extremely cheap hardware was used for both slide latches.

Today the hinge on the nesting box split the wood. It's going to take some serious work-around to mend the damage and I strongly suspect we'll be replacing the entire coop.

The chickens have been here for 15 days. We lift the nesting box lid once a day to gather eggs, maybe twice. Two weeks of what I consider light use was enough stress to splinter the wood.

It looks nice, it's cute and very compact, but the quality is seriously lacking.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... different boxes and both arrived on time and in fine condition. No issues like some previous reviews
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2015
The coop ships in two different boxes and both arrived on time and in fine condition. No issues like some previous reviews. The coop is made of the same material as our rabbit hutch and we have had that for several years. I followed the recommendation of an earlier reviewer and used wood glue on every flat surface that was screwed together. This added strength to the structure. We also added L-metals to the corners of the screen door to give it a little more robustness. Because we have bantam chickens we added additional wood strips to the ramp. We took it another step and added a frame with wheels to turn it into a chicken tractor. It only took about another hour to build the frame. Finally, we used a polyurethane to help the wood weather.

I thought it went together pretty easily. You can do it by yourself. I liked the instructions and the hardware holder is pretty nice. I hadn't seen that approach before. Worked great. Every place a screw was to go was had either a pre-drilled hole or an indent. I only found one little flaw in our coop along the roofing boarder.
